Handsome Dick's trip to Spain with the MC5 (Lisa Kekaula, BellRays, on vocals; Adam Pearson, Sisters of Mercy, guitar) was MAGNIFICENT!...
4 well attended PASSIONATE audiences...
Barcelona, Madrid, Gijon, Bilbao
In the beautiful portside city of Gijon, on Friday, December 1, right before the final encore of the night, "American Ruse," Mr. Manitoba announced to the audience in Spanish, that "Today is my son Jake's 4th birthday. Happy Birthday, Jake, I love you"....To which the already rabid audience of more than 500 people responded with a hearty chorus of "Happy Birthday"...
Blew my socks off!
Had the time of my life!

DICTATORS A&R EXEC PASSES AWAY
From HITS:
THE PASSING OF AN A&R LEGEND: Former Warner Bros. and Elektra/Asylum
A#38;R and publicity exec Karin Berg, who signed acts like Television, the Dictators,
Dire Straits and R.E.M. to the label as a champion of many of the
early new wave bands, passed away on Wednesday (10/25). Berg was one
of the first and most admired female talent executives in the
business. The St. Louis-born Berg was an ardent baseball fan, a
political activist and a civil rights pioneer in addition to being a
groundbreaking music executive. She was a member of the Riverside
Democratic club, before joining NY CORE. After years as a secretary,
she began reviewing jazz for alternative newspapers, then was a west
coast-based publicist at Elektra/Asylum, where she helped convince
label head Joe Smith to sign Televison. Her latter years were spent
as a consultant to Nonesuch, though she was confined to her Manhattan
apartment, where she had to use an oxygen tank. (10/28a)
Karin was pure gold, one of the most amazing people in the business.
Beyond just an A&R visionary, she was an incredibly warm,
intelligent, and passionate person. Above all she had impeccable
taste in all things, not just music. She was a big sister figure and
mentor to many of us in WB's heyday, and frankly, her passing signals
the end of an era as much as the closing of her old haunt, CBGBs.
